On Wednesday 24th July, our Scratch Team of Josh Bassitt, Jake Wallis and Tom Chapman won the Yorkshire Team Championship at Pannal Golf Club for the first time in the clubs 111 year history!
A fantastic, dramatic finish saw our team come out on top in a countback over Hallamshire. The competition is played off scratch, over 36 holes with all three golfers scores to count, which had all three of our players thinking of shots throughout the day which could have either cost us or won us the title in such a close finish. Every golf club in Yorkshire enters this event, sending their best players to compete in as many as seven divisions, so to come out on top in the top division is a huge coup for the club.
Jake shot -2 in the first round and followed it with a spectacular -7 in the second round to win the William Raynor Trophy for best individual score on the day. A fantastic achievement and a trophy which has previously been won by the likes of Masters Champion Danny Willet and Ryder Cup Legend Colin Montgomery.
Josh shot rounds of -3 and -2, to finish 3rd individually, another fantastic achievement. The second round included a spectacular eagle on the 13th, which if you have a spare couple of weeks he’ll tell you all about.
Tom had rounds of +4 and +3, recovering well from a mid-round wobble to play the last five holes -1 in the second round including an unbelievable up and down on 17 and a birdie on 18.
Scratch Team Captain Paul Claricoats and the team should be very proud of their performance, which gave spectators and caddies alike plenty to cheer.
The Team will now go on to compete at the English Champion Club event at Stanton-on the-Wolds Golf Club in Nottinghamshire, representing the Yorkshire Golf Union over the weekend of 21st and 22nd September. It promises to be a fantastic weekend of golf and any support would be appreciated.
A spectacular day for the club, well done to all involved and best of luck at the national event!
